Mobility and Mentalities

Mobility and mobility ideas of people within particular societies are subject to historical change. They are not only closely connected with the available material bases of mobility, such as existing communication and transportation possibilities, but also dependent upon social and individual attitudes towards mobility. In turn the chances for the realization of individual mobility performances are distributed unequally, that is to say, there are economic, social, cultural and political conditions which limit mobility opportunities. However, these limits aren't forced upon people in only a one-sided manner from the outside, e.g. either by economic compulsions or political conditions, but rather there are also subjective constraints to be considered, for example, language, cultural practices and/or the imbedding to a specific social environment (Community Attachment).

Put in concrete terms mobility and mobility ideas have a defining influence on the individual and the collective mentalities in their respective social and historical contexts. Their origin is from specific social relationships arising from attitudes which are determined by habitually imbedded thinking, decisional and action structures. Migration movements represent a particular form of mobility; they are a social fact and an integral component of societies. In the context of the conference this exciting topic of "Mobility and Mentalities" will be examined from several different perspectives.

The Institute for Regional and Migration Research (IRM) - Trier

In the context of the researches of the Institute for Regional and Migration Research (IRM) specific aspects of the development in ideas of mobility and their effects upon the change of individual and collective mentalities shall be examined. An especially important emphasis of the research activities of the institute concerns the examination of the processes and conditions attendant to migration. Since mobility is always associated with specific areas, the Institute for Regional and Migration Research (IRM) - Trier has set as its goal the examination of the conditions and results of migration processes as well as economic and social developments within the region. As a consequence both topic fields shall be developed into interdependent research concepts.
