Migration is still seen and analyzed as an exception: as an event with singularity which is different from the normality of permanent settlement. However, research shows that the migration of people is a core element of human biographies and social development.

Within incoming migration countries, juridical, political, cultural and social discrimination tends to intensify existing cultural and social differences which in turn can lead to an increased segregation. These processes lead to the creation and intensification of specific cultural identities, which are also influenced by gender issues. For the processe of generating identities the wiedling of dominance and power is relevant as is the rebellion and opposition against such overwhelming powers.

During the „Migration, Culture, and Identity“ conference, the following questions will be discussed:

  1. How do migration movements and processes of generating identity influence each other?
  2. What influences do migration movements have on the creation and development of gendered identities and gender based identity-processes?
  3. What kind of generating identity can be found amongst the 'first', 'second' and 'x' generation of migrants?
